100 Lit Challenge - GatewayIt was a gateway.
There was no metaphor. It was literally a gateway. Old, rotten, crumbling, rusting, brick and mortar or whatever the word was, black-painted iron flaking and turned copper-red and flaking some more.
A gateway with no gate in it.
It could be a metaphor, but it wasn't. It was just a gateway. A rodents' nest of some sort was wedged into a space where bricks were missing. The three-legged cat (three-and-a-half-legged, the detail-oriented or particularly smarmy would point out) putzed around in his senile way, headbutting shins and shrubs alike. A bluejay threatened the smaller birds proudly.

You’re dressed in your winter coat and boots that are too big and one of your parents has pulled your hat too close over your ears.
You’re sitting next to your mother, and on the other side is a man that smells like loneliness, something that you’ll later know as cigarettes and alcohol and homelessness. He’s crying quietly into the top of his jacket and you’re scared to look because you’ve never seen an adult cry.
