It was the last item out of the bag - a half pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream.

The day she brought it home, she saw a strange car pulling out of the driveway when she turned the corner onto their street. He denied any wrongdoing, but that he made the denial without being accused made her more suspicious than she would have been if he'd simply said it was a friend.

She took it out two days later, when he was late coming home from work, and dropped a generous scoop of it into her cocoa, nursing the drink through an hour-long "documentary" on kittens and their cute fuzzy ways. He came home halfway through it, and they sat on the couch together until it was over.

The next person to take it out, four days later, did not live at the house. She was his guest, but it was not his ice cream. But she did not want it, and merely held it aside as she reached for the ice tray, putting it back upside-down.

The other girl's handprint had frosted over and disappeared by the time they decided to share the ice cream together the next day. And it was a peaceful, warm evening.

She'd had a bad day at work, and come home to finish the ice cream on her lunch break, when she caught him with the other girl. His lies caught up to him immediately, and before either could be angry at the other, they were angry at him.

They reconciled over what remained of the ice cream, as he stood locked outside and hammering on the door.
